Born in Seoul, South Korea, Bae Doo-Na's mother was a stage actress, so the young Bae had much experience when she made her on screen debut in the Korean TV series "School" (KBS1 1989). Her first feature film was "Barking Dogs Never Bite" (2000), also the debut of director Bong Joon-ho. In 2002, Bae played a pivotal role in "Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance" (2002), the first in director Park Chan-Wook's acclaimed Vengeance Trilogy, which include "Oldboy" (2003) and "Lady Vengeance" (2005). Bae and Bong reteamed on the sci-fi monster movie, "The Host" (2005), which was a smash hit in Korea and gave Bae more international attention. Directors Andy and Lana Wachowski noticed, and cast Bae in "Cloud Atlas" (2012), their adaptation of the epic time-shifting novel by David Mitchell. She returned to Korea to star in "A Girl At My Door" (2014), a wrenching story of a female police officer and her attempt to save a young girl from domestic violence. Bae continue her collaboration with the Wachowskis when she appeared in a supporting role in "Jupiter Ascending" (2015), then as one of the leads in their science fiction series "Sense8" (Netflix, 2015-17).
