Prolific British actor David Calder is most well known for his parts in TV movies and series from his homeland, though he has also made supporting appearances in higher profile fare such as the James Bond film "The World Is Not Enough." Born in Portsmouth, England, and trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, Calder earned his first credit as the lead in the 1970 sexploitation flick "The Meatrack," playing a young man who turns to prostitution in order to survive in the seedy underbelly of San Francisco. This early degenerate character ran contrary to his more common future roles as distinguished and commanding older gentlemen, often officers of the law, on such shows as the heist saga mini-series "Widows" and the science fiction series "Star Cops." Called on to play exactly such a role, he was the doomed billionaire father of Sophie Marceau's character in "The World Is Not Enough," which featured Pierce Brosnan as James Bond, and he played a professor of archaeology in the action-packed yarn "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor." He also appeared in the second installment of the critically acclaimed trilogy of crime films, "Red Riding: In the Year of our Lord."
