In the US from 1919. Although his films perhaps lack a distinctive stamp, he is noted for his deft handling of actors and is probably best remembered for the swank, star-studded "Grand Hotel" (1932). A favored directors of Hollywood's top female stars (he worked with, among others, Greta Garbo, Joan Crawford, Norma Shearer, Joan Fontaine, Ann Harding, Merle Oberon, Ginger Rogers, and Dorothy McGuire) Goulding enjoyed a particularly fruitful association with Bette Davis, directing her in "That Certain Woman" (1937), "Dark Victory," "The Old Maid" (both 1939) and "The Great Lie" (1941).
