Actor George Newbern was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, the son of Betty and David, a Spanish teacher and a radiologist respectively. As a child, Newbern performed in productions at the Arkansas Arts Center in Little Rock. Newbern moved from this local theater work on to roles in movies and television. In 1987, he got his first lead TV role in a retelling of Mark Twain's The Prince and the Pauper, called "Double Switch" (ABC, 1987). In the late '80s and early '90s, Newbern had a recurring role as Payne McElroy on "Designing Women" (CBS, 1986-1993). In 1987, he played opposite Elisabeth Shue in the family caper movie "Adventures in Babysitting" (1987). In 1991 Newbern landed the role he is perhaps known best for, as Bryan MacKenzie in "Father of the Bride" (1991) opposite Steve Martin and Diane Keaton. He also appeared in the movie's sequel "Father of the Bride Part II" (1995). In 1998 Newbern appeared in three episodes of "Friends" (NBC, 1994-2004). In 2000, Newbern was cast in a principal role in the TNT original series "Bull" (TNT, 2000). Newbern appeared in 20 episodes of the series, which was ultimately canceled after one season. Throughout the 2000s and 2010s Newbern appeared in a number of television series before he was cast as Charlie on the ABC series "Scandal" (ABC, 2012-2017).
