With his classic good looks and stoic demeanor, Jim Metzler has had a long career as a character actor. His most notable part was probably Mason McCormick, brother of Matt Dillon's title character in the 1982 Disney movie, "Tex," which won him a Golden Globe nomination very early in his career. Prior to this role Metzler had attended Dartmouth College where he was a talented baseball pitcher. While there he was drafted by the Boston Red Sox, but decided to chuck his baseball dreams to pursue acting. Following his success in "Tex," Metzler worked on a number of successful TV series, including the 1985-1986 mini-series "North and South," about the trials of two friends on opposing sides in the American Civil War. From here he fell into supporting work on television and in some of the lesser films of the 1980s. He resurged in the early 1990s with the role of Dud Cole in the landmark indie crime drama "One False Move" alongside Bill Paxton. Metzler spent most of the 1990s finding roles on television and in incidental features, but in 1997 landed the part of a city councilman in Curtis Hanson's award-winning crime thriller "L.A. Confidential." In the 2000s Metzler worked almost exclusively in television, becoming a familiar face on procedural dramas like "CSI: NY" and "Crossing Jordan," and found a recurring role again with Paxton in the HBO polygamy series "Big Love."
