The son of actress Jean Stapleton and producer/director William H. Putch, John Putch was a child actor who began his career in one of his father's summer theater runs. The familial theme continued as he made his first TV appearance in "All in the Family," which starred his mother. He then went on to have a recurring role on the sitcom "One Day at a Time" from 1976 until 1983. Putch also appeared in "Jaws 3-D" and made numerous guest appearances on TV shows such as "Family Ties" and "The Love Boat." He co-starred on the early '90s small-seen sitcom"Room For Two" in the early '90s and appeared in several lower budget films. In 1985, he began directing with the indie film"Waiting to Act," which he also wrote and produced. By the mid '90s, his focus had gradually shifted to directing, and he found work on several TV shows, including the children's program "Big Bad Beetleborgs" and the sitcom "Grounded For Life." After 2001, he focused exclusively on directing and producing, helming multiple episodes of the hospital sitcom"Scrubs," the drama "Ugly Betty," and the Courtney Cox-starring comedy "Cougar Town." Putch also has several editing credits to his name, including on the 2006 indie film "Mojave Phone Booth," which he also wrote and directed.
