Josh Heald created and wrote the improbably titled 2010 comedy film "Hot Tub Time Machine." The garrulous Heald was a college roommate and close friend of "Harold & Kumar" writer/director Jon Hurwitz, and has a brief cameo in "Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay." He came up with the "Hot Tub Time Machine" idea during a 2008 meeting with producer Matt Moore. When Moore opined that someone should remake the '80s exploitation/ski comedy "Hot Dog," Heald misunderstood it as "Hot Tub," and decided that he wanted to write a ski-resort comedy using a hot tub to transport the characters from the present day to the '80s. Not only did Heald's detailed draft sell quickly, but genuine celebrity John Cusack, who played the lead in several quintessential '80s teen movies such as "Better Off Dead" and "Say Anything," signed on early to star and produce. Heald also wrote a role specifically for "Daily Show" correspondent/comedian Rob Corddry. The film, a sleeper hit upon its release in early '10, elevated the profiles of Heald, Corddry, and co-star Craig Robinson, and has enjoyed strong home video sales since its theatrical run.
