Chiefly associated with Dutch director Paul Verhoeven, for whom he has created several exquisite canvases, from the melancholic hues of "Soldier of Orange" (1979) and "Spetters" (1981) to the hard-edged, high-tech worlds of "Robocop" (1988) and "Total Recall" (1990). Vacano is noted for his crisp color and fluid, mobile camera work; other notable credits include Volker Schlondorff's "The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum" (1975) and Wolfgang Petersen's "Das Boot" (1981).
