Kario Salem began acting at the tender age of 17. He had an early role on the television special "The 13th Day: The Story of Esther" (ABC, 1979-1980). He additionally was featured in the miniseries "Once an Eagle" (1976-77), "Testimony of Two Men" (1976-77) and "Centennial" (1978-79). Salem began his entertainment career acting in films like "Some Kind of Hero" (1982) with Richard Pryor. His work around this time also included a part on the TV movie "Shooter" (NBC, 1988-89). Following that project, he appeared in the drama "Triumph of the Spirit" (1989) with Willem Dafoe, "The Boy Who Cried B*tch" (1991) with Harley Cross and the Gérard Depardieu action picture "1492: The Conquest of Paradise" (1992). He followed this recognition with scripts for the crime drama "The Score" (2001) with Robert De Niro and "Mindhunters" (2005). In addition to his writing, Salem also appeared in the Olivier Gruner action flick "Savage" (1996). Most recently, Salem wrote the biographical drama "Chasing Mavericks" (2012) with Gerard Butler. Salem won an Outstanding Writing For a Miniseries or a Movie Primetime Emmy Award for "Don King: Only in America" in 1998.
