Lolo Jones

A world-class track star, Lolo Jones became a popular sports celebrity in the 2010s. Born Aug. 5, 1982 in Des Moines, IA, Lori "Lolo" Susan Jones overcame a difficult childhood of grinding poverty thanks to her world-class athletic ability. As a star member of Louisiana State University's track team who specialized in the 60m and 100m hurdles, Jones won three national championships and 11 All-American titles. Although she failed to qualify for the 2004 Summer Olympics, Jones rebounded to win the 60m hurdles event at the 2008 World Indoor Championships, but came in seventh in the 100m hurdles at the 2008 Summer Olympics after stumbling over a hurdle. After winning the 60m hurdles at the 2010 World Indoor Championships, Jones was tapped as the heavy favorite to win gold in the 100m hurdles at the 2012 Summer Olympics, but came in fourth. One of the most heavily publicized athletes of that Olympics, Jones drew criticism for what many considered the media's inordinate focus on her. Angered by the insinuation that she was receiving attention merely for her beauty and for revealing she was a virgin, Jones countered that she had the achievement, talent and world records to prove to any naysayer that she was, indeed, an elite-level athlete. She surprised many when, in 2012, she was named to the U.S. national bobsled team, winning a gold medal as the brakewoman in the mixed-team competition at the 2013 World Championship and competing in the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. Returning to track and field, Jones advanced to the finals at the 2015 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, and won the Women's 100 Meter Hurdles event at the North American, Central American and Caribbean Championships in Costa Rica.
