A lovely, ethereal redhead, Lotte Verbeek was a fortunate European actress who was able to find success with American audiences, thanks to her roles in the historical drama "The Borgias" and the hit young adult romance "The Fault in Our Stars" (2014). Lotte Verbeek was born on June 24, 1982 in Venlo, Limburg, in The Netherlands. Verbeek got into dancing at the age of sixteen, but she ultimately realized it wasn't for her, and transitioned into drama and performing. (In addition, Verbeek learned multiple languages, including English, French, German, and Italian.) Verbeek worked her way through school as a dancer and a model, then broke into film with "Links" (2007), a psychological drama in which she played five different roles. Verbeek also played dual roles in "Suspension of Disbelief" (2012), directed by Mike Figgis. As Verbeek's acting career took off, she won Best Actress awards at a pair of film festivals for starring in writer/director Urszula Antoniak's experimental drama "Nothing Personal" (2009). Verbeek's North American breakthrough came when she landed the role of Guilia Farnese in "The Borgias" (Showtime 2011-13), a cable drama created by director Neil Jordan. Verbeek also has a featured role on the sci-fi series "Outlander" (Starz, 2014-). Her first major role in an American film came with a featured part in the young adult drama "The Fault in Our Stars," playing Lidewij, the assistant to cranky author Peter Van Houten, played by Willem Dafoe. Verbeek next co-starred in the dystopian thriller "Division 19" (2014).
