Margaret Whiting

Actress-musician Margaret Whiting made a splash in Hollywood both on and off-screen. Whiting had an early acting career in film, appearing in such titles as the Dirk Bogarde dramatic adaptation "The Password Is Courage" (1962), "Mr. Quilp" (1975) and the Patrick Wayne adventure "Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger" (1977). She also appeared in the musical "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" (1978) with Peter Frampton. She worked in television in her early acting career as well, including a part on "The Strauss Family" (ABC, 1972-73). She appeared in a number of television specials, including "The Bob Hope Show (01/09/55)" (NBC, 1954-55) and "Big Band Cavalcade" (PBS, 1974-75). Her work around this time also included a part on the TV movie "The Secret Garden" (CBS, 1987-88). She also contributed to a variety of television specials, including "Jukebox Saturday Night II" (1989-1990), "The Great Love Songs" (PBS, 1994-95) and "Judy Garland: Beyond the Rainbow" (1996-97). Whiting also created music for the Sam Shepard dramatic adventure "The Right Stuff" (1983) and the Warren Beatty dramatic biopic "Bugsy" (1991). Whiting took on film roles in more recent years, appearing in the dramatic adaptation "Langrishe, Go Down" (2002) with Annette Crosbie, "Anita O'Day: The Life of a Jazz Singer" (2008) with Amy Albany and "Wrangler: Anatomy of an Icon" (2008). Whiting's music was most recently used in "Low Down" (2014). Additionally, she appeared on the television special "The Songs of Johnny Mercer -- Too Marvelous For Words" (PBS, 1996-97). Whiting also contributed music to the Penélope Cruz dramatic adaptation "Elegy" (2008) and "Julie & Julia" (2009) with Meryl Streep. Whiting passed away in January 2011 at the age of 87.
