Born in 1964 in Lancashire, England, makeup artist Mark Coulier began working in special makeup effects in 1988. His first professional project was for the feature film "Waxwork" (1988), a low-budget horror film about the owner of a wax museum who uses his possessed exhibitions to wreak havoc on the larger world. During the late '80s and early '90s Coulier continued to apply his skills to movies in the horror genre, including work on films such as "Nightbreed" (1990), "Waxwork II: Lost in Time" (1992), "Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth" (1992) and "Candyman" (1992). Films in the horror category continued to populate Coulier's resume well into the 2000s, but by then he was beginning to work on a number of non-horror productions with big stars and higher production values, such as the Leonardo DiCaprio feature "The Beach" (2000) and "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" (2001). Coulier continued his work on the "Harry Potter" series, and was a key prosthetic makeup artist on "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" (2007), "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" (2007) and "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" (2009). In 2014 Coulier was the prosthetic makeup designer for Wes Anderson's "The Grand Budapest Hotel" (2014) for which he received an Academy Award.
