Although best known as the voice of Sheldon Plankton in the animated television hit "SpongeBob SquarePants," voice actor, comedian, writer and director Mr. Lawrence got his start in stand-up comedy. His unique sense of humor led to his first job in animation, the low-level position of layout assistant on six episodes of the enormously popular cartoon "The Ren & Stimpy Show" in 1992. The following year, Lawrence began writing and directing segments of another cult favorite cartoon, "Rocko's Modern Life," an often surprisingly racy comedy about the misadventures of an Australian wallaby struggling to adjust to life in America; in addition to his behind the scenes work, Lawrence provided the voice for a recurring character, Filburt Turtle. In 1999, Lawrence helped kick off the "SpongeBob SquarePants" cartoon series, centering on the undersea world of a cheerful and optimistic sea sponge and his friends. Once again, Lawrence contributed as writer and, in addition to voicing Plankton, also gave voice to Larry the Lobster. Lawrence has also voiced Plankton on the numerous "SpongeBob SquarePants" video games, as well as 2004's "The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie." In 2000, Lawrence wrote and performed in a five-minute comic short film, "Hairballs" and two years later provided a voice in the Japanese animated series "Ergo Proxy." Lawrence also voiced several characters in the animated series "Camp Lazlo," reprising the roles for a 2007 television movie.
