During Hollywood's Golden Age, talent scouts for the various studios scoured the country for new talent. Not long after World War II, a representative for Warner Brothers caught a production of a Loyola University play featuring Paul Picerni, and the rest, as they say, is history. Picerni was brought to Hollywood to be a part of the 1950 war drama "Breakthrough" and was soon put under contract by the studio, starring for them in a long line of B movies. But his signature role came a decade later on the small screen, when he joined the cast of "The Untouchables" as Agent Lee Hobson. It's easy to forget today just how groundbreaking a show this Chicago cops drama was. Narrated by famed journalist Walter Winchell, it brought a new level of heightened reality to television. Picerni continued to act through the mid-1980s, as a guest star on everything from "Gunsmoke" to "Mannix" to "Matt Houston." For his old pal Dick Van Dyke, he came out of retirement in the late 1990s to appear in a pair of "Diagnosis Murder" episodes.
