Snowboarder Redmond "Red" Gerard was born in Rocky River, Ohio, on June 29, 2000. The sixth of seven children, he began snowboarding with his older siblings at the age of 2. When the family moved to Colorado a few years later, parents Conrad and Jen Gerard built a terrain park in the clan's backyard, which allowed Gerard to train nearly constantly. He began competing in amateur contests in 2011 and achieved some success. In 2015 he finished in fourth place at the Junior World Championships and started competing in professional contests. In his first full season on the professional circuit in 2015-16, he scored top-five finishes on the Dew Tour and at the Burton U.S. Open. During the 2016-17 season, he won the Mammoth Grand Prix, which served as the first official qualifier for the U.S. Olympic slopestyle team. He ended that season as the FIS World Cup champion in slopestyle, earning his first Crystal Globe. Gerard achieved a second victory in a selection event in January 2018, helping him punch his ticket to the 2018 Winter Olympics - his first - in PyeongChang, South Korea, to compete in slopestyle and big air events. Qualifying as a 17-year-old gave him the opportunity to become the youngest American snowboarder to date to earn a medal at a Winter Olympics. Once in PyeongChang, Gerard went on to achieve that goal, also becoming the first athlete on the U.S. team to earn a medal when he won the gold in men's slopestyle. Outside of snowboarding, Gerard enjoys participating in other action sports, including skateboarding and surfing.
