American actor Robert Newman is best known for his nearly three-decade involvement in the daytime television soap opera "Guiding Light." Newman worked on "Guiding Light" from 1981 until the series finale in 2009, taking a break from the show only in the years of 1985 and 1992. He joined the cast soon after recieving his theater degree from the California State University at Northridge. On the show, Newman played the role of Joshua Lewis, a character whose relationship with his lover, Reva Shayne, was one of the show's central story lines. The actor's portrayal of the character won him to two Daytime Emmy nominations. While he was on break from the show in 1985, Newman took a supporting role on the daytime television drama "General Hospital." He also had a recurring role as Kirk Cranston, a villainous businessman, on the television series "Santa Barbara" in 1986. In addition to his work in daytime soap operas, Newman played supporting characters in the made-for-television films "Destination America" and "Class of '61" and the television series "Hunter." After "Guiding Light" ended its run, Newman appeared in "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," "Criminal Minds," and "NCIS" as well as in a starring role in the off-Broadway musical "Sessions."
