Though not a household name, Selena Royle was a mainstay in Hollywood movies during the 1940s. The daughter of noted playwright Edward Milton Royle, she gravitated toward theater before appearing in films. Royle proved to be adept with maternal parts, an ability that she showcased in the 1944 war drama "The Fighting Sullivans," where she portrayed the mother of five brothers serving in World War II. Royle also turned up as matriarchs in "Courage of Lassie," starring a young Elizabeth Taylor, and "Joan of Arc," featuring Ingrid Bergman. During the early 1950s, Royle became a target of the House Un-American Activities Committee, leading to the end of her screen career.
