Ex-clothing industry magnate Sidney Kimmel made a big move in the 2000s to become a Hollywood player. He set himself up in Los Angeles as Sidney Kimmel Entertainment, hiring an in-house casting director, creative executives, and others. Despite some critical hits like "Lars and the Real Girl" and "The Kite Runner," based on Khaled Hosseini's acclaimed novel, Kimmel had the misfortune of entering the film industry at a time when the independent and art house scenes were undergoing fundamental changes. He was confronted with a new world that embraced lower overhead productions and crowd-sourced funding. So within just a few years of opening for business in Hollywood, he decided to cut his losses, closing down his company in favor of producing more mainstream products. As such, he oversaw the '10 remake "Death at a Funeral," the '11 Josh Lucas-Marisa Tomei drama, "The Lincoln Lawyer," and the '11 Katherine Heigl comedy "One for the Money."
