Whether he was doing sketches for Second City audiences in Chicago or voice over work for animated television shows, Thomas Middleditch was known for his nerdy, off-beat persona. While growing up in the northern British Columbia town of Nelson, Middleditch took every opportunity he could to indulge in his need to act, as well as his knack for comedic timing. He was doing stand-up routines by the time he was in high school, and left soon after graduation for Chicago to try his hand at the legendary Second City stage. In addition to appearing on Second City's iO stage, he co-founded the improvisational troupe The Improvised Shakespeare Company before moving on to New York City. His first leading film role came in the Canadian romantic comedy "Splinterheads" (2009) opposite Rachael Taylor. In New York, he became involved with another legendary comedy troupe, Upright Citizens Brigade (UCB). The friendships he made at both Second City and the UCB got him a steady stream of work in online comedy sketches; a three-year stint on the College Humor original series "Jake and Amir" as Doobs, the childhood nemesis of co-star Amir Blumenfeld, gained him a cult following. Middleditch next appeared on the big screen with a very small role in Martin Scorsese's "Wolf of Wall Street" (2013), but it was his casting in the lead role of Mike Judge's tech world satire "Silicon Valley" (HBO 2014- ) that finally brought him to wide public attention.
