Garth Davis was an Australian director who began his career as a fine artist and designer. He transitioned into commercial directing, and became internationally recognized for his treatment of the craft, even finishing as a finalist in the 2010 Directors Guild of America awards. In film, Davis made his directorial debut with a feature documentary entitled "P.I.N.S." (2000), which followed three average Australian parking inspectors. The film received favorable critical attention in Australia, and Davis followed it up with "Alice" (2003), a narrative short that follows a young couple and their new baby. In 2006, he directed three episodes of the critically acclaimed Australian drama "Love My Way" (Showtime, 2004-07). Davis co-directed the first season of the mystery drama series "Top of the Lake" (Sundance Channel, 2013-) alongside Jane Campion; they shared a nomination for a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Miniseries, Movie, or Dramatic Special. Davis directed his breakout project in 2016, "Lion," which received an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture. The film, which starred Dev Patel and told the true story of an Australian man who used Google Earth to find his biological family in India, received widespread critical acclaim and elevated Davis' profile. He next directed "Mary Magdalene" (2017), starring Rooney Mara, Joaquin Phoenix, and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
